Now, although, I much admire the Cakes Shops creations, my only tasting was a considerable disappoint!
At a friends for Easter tea last year, my host produced one of their cakes...
It was all show, dry texture & no flavour!
I guess I was over critical, not because of my own coquinating, [one of my Adopted Words, meaning to behave as a cook] but because, my friend Aunt J, use to bake an incredible Victoria Sandwich, never ever surpassed by anyone in my opinion.
Even my own Mother, a good cake cook, couldn't match the lightness & more important, the moistness of Aunt J's sponge.
And, I certainly never could - filled with lightly whipped fresh Cream & home-made Scottish Raspberry jam, it was heavenly - to die for.
I remember those Sunday afternoon teas with sweet nostalgia!
Aunt J followed the 'old school recipe' using Plain Flour, Cream of Tartar & Bicarbonate of Soda, instead of modern Self-raising Flour, and baked it in a coke fired Aga cooker.
Sadly now, confined to living with her son & diet conscious daughter-in-law Skyebird, she isn't allowed to cook any more, so her delicious sponge is lost to the world.
I do still have her old receipt, for those interested...
4 ozs soft Butter
3-3 1/2 ozs White Sugar
6 ozs Plain Flour
2 fresh farm Eggs
1 1/2 tsp Cream of Tartar
3/4 tsp Bicarbonate of Soda
Method - traditional creaming.
I have no oven temps or times, with a old temperamental Aga, it was down to experience & good judgement!

I loved the wedding table...wonder if they look like the real guests, I bet they did.
Dx
C is also for Crasy - and I would have gone crasy in that store!!! Mmmmmmm - I want it all :)
Ps - and next week it is D for Diet ;)
the cakes look wonderful, but I know what you mean, they are a disappointment when you actually eat them. Perhaps too much concentration on the outside decor and not enough to the taste.
Son No 2 was given a beautiful birthday cake by his girlfriend last year, it was made especially by our Celebration Station cake shop, and it was in the shape and decor of the outside of the pretty pub he worked in at the time. He kept the icing in a whole piece, I think we still have it somewhere in the depths of his bedroom!!
Letty ;0))))))
I made a victoria sponge the other day, and used new sponge cake tins, sadly they were too big, and now have two very flat sponges which look awful.
Think the birds are going to get a feast very soon!
Love the cakes, what fantastic designs eh? Shame about the insides though.

Beautiful cakes, but no matter how often I hear, "It's all in the presentation.", I'm not a believer. For me, it's all in the taste. What is a pretty cake if it isn't tasty?
It seems to me that Valentine's Day should be Sugar Day!!! I love the row of wedding guests!
Oh dearesy cousin Blue....my mouth is watering and mommy is drooling over the yummy cakes here today! I hope all is well with you and that you are looking forward to Spring....gosh you had such pretty snow there in that garden photo. I have an award for you on my bloggy today. Hope you are feeling well and come for tea and take it home with you.

I wonder how that Barbie Bride would have looked after, let us say a year, on that diet?
It just looks too good!!!
One word: Yummy!
Cakieeeees. Yummy c post. Are going to get a recipe a week. I like the idea. Diets just should not be allowed.
And on my diet, I am crying...
What a delicious-looking post! Such a shame that the cakes don't match the decoration. I hate dry sponges.
OOh la la - just seeing this for the first time - what a beautiful 5th birthday cake - we have a granddaughter turning five tomorrow- that would have been perfect.
BTW, we are going to try participating tomorrow in True Colors, not much orange here, but we have to start with something:-)
Woos, the OP Pack
Pee Ess, are woo in OP, KS? I just noticed your live traffic feed.
YUMMMMMM
Oh my goodness, those cakes look absolutely incredible!! But you know, I've come across cake shops like that, too, where the cakes look so mouthwatering, and yet when you bite into one, they're dry and tasteless. SO disappointing.
I'm going to copy out your Aunt's sponge cake recipe and try it! I've got very lazy about cooking, but I'm gonna have to do it!!
However, it will have Wilkin's Little Scarlett strawberry jam as filler, because that's the only one we have in the house these days! ;)
Great photos...I especially like the storefront image...looking beyond the goodies to the preparation work...would, however, love a slice of the tall chocolate cake...
Wonderful and yummy post! And many, many thanks for the recipe.
I posted a cupcake today--there we go again with our great minds, Blue!
Thanks for sharing with us.

Oh my gosh! I don't think I should have come over tonight because now I want something sinfully sweet! Wow, do these cakes look delightful!
Those cakes are way too pretty to even think about eating! They're works of art!
Mom told us to say that! We're drooling!
Love ya lots
